Day 162: I’ve got multiple personalities

Not in a Sybil sort of way. I’m pretty dead set on who I am, all day, every day, whether I like it or not. Don’t you love it when people say they are “finding themselves” and what they really mean is that they’re trying to turn themselves into someone they like? Eventually, you are who you are.

Anyway, I came across this article about Five Labs, an online tool that supposedly judges personality based on Facebook pages. It’s interesting, if not terribly reliable. According to this thing, I’m inventive, analytical, reserved, sensitive and efficient. Okay. That makes some sense.

It reminded me, you are probably not surprised to know, of the Myers-Briggs personality tests. I know I took one, or a facsimile of one, when I was in college, but I have no recollection of what the result was.

So, in a bid to find out who the Internet thinks I am, I took the test. First from one site. Then another. You know, some of those questions are annoying. Like “do you enjoy the company of others?” Well, I enjoy the company of people I like. I don’t enjoy the company of people I don’t like. Or “do you take initiative in social situations?” With people I know very well, yes, especially if they’re being indecisive and annoying. At, say, a networking event, I have to force myself not to hide out in the ladies’ room the whole time.

And what do you know? Two different results. According to one site, I’m INFJ, while another claims I’m INFP. Site one informs me I’m 78 percent introverted, meanwhile this Five Labs thing tells me I’m 41 percent extroverted. Grant you, I’m a lot more comfortable expressing myself in writing than actually being in a roomful of people, so that makes sense. It’s easier to be outgoing online than in person.

But the lesson to be learned here is this: Don’t believe everything the Internet tells you.

Day 155: Deadpool … It’s not just a game

My internet is on the fritz (thanks, Comcast), and typing on an iPhone screen is crap, so this one is going to be short and sweet. In fact, consider this a placeholder.

My nerd education grows. Today, my friend introduced me to Deadpool via strange YouTube parody videos.

Funny, I’d always thought Deadpool was just a game about placing bets on celebrity deaths. No idea it was a Marvel character.

Further interesting discussion ensued. To be edited later when I’m not going cross-eyed. Please direct all complaints to Comcast for cocking up my internet.

Day 154: Damn, this traffic jam…

First, you’re welcome for the ear worm. Second, if anyone would like to join me in a session of listening to James Taylor, or anyone else, I would find that far more relaxing than my attempt to learn SEO. Actually, at this point in time, I’m not even positive if I’m yet trying to learn SEO, or trying to figure out whether that’s the best thing for me to learn or if there’s some other method of traffic increasing I need to know.

Upshot: The Internet is confusing. Remember our pre-Internet days? I do. They were nice. We rode our bikes, and read our books, and tweeting was left to the birds. But, as they say, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and so if I have to do the Internet, by God, I need to learn how to do it better. That means learning how to increase traffic to this blog, of course, but in the grander scheme of things, it means learning valuable new skills that will help me in my professional life.

Foolish lady I am, however, I thought: “Oh, hey, for my new thing today, I’ll learn SEO!” And then I go one one site, one, and I’m like, “Oh boy, that’s a lot of information.” And then I feel like this…

Clearly, this is something that is going to take me more than an afternoon to learn. So, anyone have any good tips or resources? Feeling a little overwhelmed and impatient right now.

Day 75: Girly life hacks

My friend who is an obsessive nail artist informed me today that painting across the tops of the nails after painting lengthwise helps to prevent chipping.

This might seem useless and frivolous to some, but to anyone who tries to maintain a decent manicure (this does not generally include myself), this is useful information. Also, Zooey Deschanel would totally approve of this post.

Besides, my other option was to write about some new things I learned about polyamory (via a conversation), and God knows I am not writing on that topic without far more research and expert (preferably with PhD’s on the topic) interviews. Too many landmines. This is The Something New Project, not the Let’s Screw Myself on the Internet Project.
